I emailed this to the mailing list today, and got generally agreement back, so I'll post it here for wider perusal. You should be able to tell what I'm talking about:

[absolutely biased prejudice based cynism] To be honest I haven't been impressed by or particularly enjoyed any of the films. They're far too hackneyed and cliched, nor do they contain anything particularly original or inventive. Though I do admire the author's careful developed money spinning tool. I always get the feeling (based on what I've heard /seen etc) she wrote the stories (not that I've read any of them) by making a list of all the aspects that make certain books really popular and wove them into story that she then aimed at an audience that doesn't require her to actually be a particularly good writer but does have the largest market for royalty making merchandising. [absolutely biased prejudice based cynism ends]

And a calculation of film quality:

Book length increases exponentially across series + unchanging film length + guaranteed box office sales = films that get progressively worse, and cover exponentially less of the story

ROTFL! I wish there was Brad Pitt in long skirt merchandising... ;-)

Fully seconded. While I immensely enjoy reading the books, they certainly aren't of any great literary value. And yes, the films are getting more and more atrocious.

I am looking forward to the later films, which will be incabable to covering enough of their book to make any sort of story, unless they do a FLCL-style manga frenzy to try and cover things fast enough.
And then fade to goo.

I really enjoy the books... meep? and the first two films did justice to the stories, but this one was a disappointment I'll agree.
