The first series was good. It was never very original, but it borrowed from good places and told the story well with excellent performances, interesting characters and impressive, but not particularly over the top effects. The story was compelling, the pacing fantastic and the direction free of particularly grating or annoying traits.
It also to which I am eternally grateful to the writers ended well; which means that regardless of how the second series (and any future ones turn out) the first can be enjoyed as a standalone piece, one that wouldn't lose anything if no more of it had been made.
So many series end before their time (Firefly), suffer at the hands of external circumstance which prevent them telling the original story as planned (Babylon 5), or just collapse into a steaming pile of crud after a promising start (X-Files/Lost). I've come to appreciate what I can get, and I can't ask more than for a good series, made well, that got to tell a complete story without interference.
