Windows and computer oddity

Just a quick post to gather information/opinions.
My computer after two and a half years of mostly happy behaviour (especially when I had a faulty bios updated) and no hardware upgrades at all, has a chat with windows when I booted up this morning.
Windows decided that my hardware had significantly changed and so I should therefore revalidate my genuine copy. I think windows just got bored.
Anyway can anyone think of any good reason at all this might have happened, especially ones that would tell me if parts of my hardware are engaged in some secret slow self destruct measure.
