I just got emailed back by Interesting Fresher Girl whose name some of you might have guessed but will shortly read.

Um, ok, right, yes um?

gah?

John and Nick *waves finger* er... thing?

Anyway to get helpful comments and stuff. Here is the version of the email I sent and then the reply.

My email (edited by John and Nick):

"Hi,

It's Dominic from Sci-fi - er, the one hobbit pushed backwards over the seats last week, if you remember... I'm doing CS and Maths but I'm on placement this year in Bristol, but still live in Bath.

Anyway I was vaguely curious about your name, what with you getting the honorary best freshers name award, so I did a search using webmail's address book thing and it turns out you're the only P in the uni. There about 10 Dom's by the looks of it.

Seeing as you're doing the whole nervous fresher thing with the rest of them, and as I now had your email I thought I'd send a friendly greeting message.:-)

Hopefully see you at the Donnie Darko screening (its a good film, come and watch!)

Dom."

Her reply:

"Hi Dominic,

nice to hear from you! Your message did come across as both friendly and a greeting so you've certainly succeeded in your goal. I think you also chose a good 'trigger memory' -- the hobbit incident did kind of stick in my mind.

I'll definitely be seeing Donnie Darko, it sounds really good...then again, that's what I thought about Read or Die...

10 Dominics sounds quite rare actually, considering the number of students there must be here...I've only ever heard rumours of other P's.

See you around then,

P"

Um, so...? Er?

LOL at Biscuit. Also, I thught tonight was FLCL and next week was Donnie Darko. I'll be pissed off if I've missed Donnie Darko. *mopes*

As to the e-mail, what's the problem. You sent her a random e-mail, she actually replied. That's a start.

Besides emails from people involved in Sci-Fi to scared new freshers have a high success rate :-) It worked for me (gah, that was 3 years ago. Where'd the time go?)
