Catching Up
May. 12th, 2011 07:27 pmSo I've been meaning to write an LJ entry for a while, but lack of energy or time has as usual scuppered my intentions.
Where to begin. I had a nice long Easter break, in which I didn't get as much done as I hoped. I got a lot done, it's just my list of jobs to do is somewhat longer. In the end I managed a mixture of cleaning, garden maintenance, cooking, shopping, ironing, and preparing to get my attic floored. The jobs I'm most happy about having finished were cutting the hedges in the back garden, cleaning the car, and cleaning the oven. The hedge because it's something I hadn't managed to do since buying the place, and aftercutting hacking off 2-3 feet of width I've managed to reclaim a fair bit of garden and discover some plants that had got lost in it's growth. Cleaning the car was a job I'd simply failed to get around to doing, so that was good, even you couldn't tell I had done so after Rachael parked it at her place of work. The oven is just one of those jobs that takes a lot of time, and elbow grease and so only gets done about 4 times a year, when I should probably be doing it more frequently.
To give you an idea of all the other things I had wanted to get done, here's the house jobs I can think of just off the top of my head:
Oil the hinges of the windows.
Clean the windows and the window frames
Clean up/Oil the garage door mechanism.
Clean the garage door.
Reattach the part of the top front facing that came off the garage door.
Re-grout the first line of tiles above the bath, where it's settled lower from when the tiles were first laid.
Repaint the areas of the bathroom that need it.
Clean the inner doors.
Paint the inner doors.
Clean and possibly repaint the gate to the garden.
Clean the patio slabs
Removes the plants from between the patio slabs.
Clear all the perennial weeds from the side of the driveway, and everywhere else they seem to be growing.
Tile the wall and window sill behind the kitchen sink
Fill the notch in the plaster in the lounge I accidentally created over Christmas.
What I did get done I managed by doing about a normal working days effort from Good Friday till the following Thursday. I even got some preparation for having our attic floored (which is now started) done while down at my parents to celebrate my brothers birthday. This did mean I managed to use some of my time to finish Dead Space and get another game off my 2009 Steam Christmas sale back log. Dead Space was good in a more Resident Evil 4 rather than Alien Resurrection way i.e. generally not particularly scary once you got used to how the enemies triggered, but fundamentally fun to play.
The Royal Wedding bank holiday weekend, I spent up in Nottingham*, binging on tabletop RPGs. Mostly 3.5, but a little Barbarians too. It was a meeting of my core group of friends from college, having suggested the last time we meet that we should meeting up regularly (a few times a year) to do long gaming weekends. The hope was we'd keep better in touch, and also make the travelling a bit fairer for everyone. We tended to meet up at a friends place in Weston-Super-Mare. A pleasant distance from Bath, not too bad from Nottingham, but very far from Yorkshire. The conclusion is that 3.5 doesn't work for horror style games, that next time we need to plan less stuff, the start of the long running campaign I ran seems to suggest a promising start and barbarians is a great quick pick up and play system.
( Aside about Barbarians )
The only downside of the weekend, is that for one reason or another (reminiscing) we went to bed at gone 2am, nearly 4am, and just before 2am Friday, Saturday and Sunday night. I was certainly completely shattered that next week, as I suspect was nearly everyone else.
*I left in time to half watch the Royal wedding it was nice in a it clearly wasn't a cynically motivated wedding sort of way. Something it probably did the country good to see.
Last weekend was spent getting things done, and then going to a Magic Prerelease on Sunday. I took Liz and Jack with me, as they'd hadn't done a prerelease before and then proceeded to win the tournament. So I'm thinking they can come with me next time (if they're interested) and act as good luck charms.
This last week, I've been fairly tired still, but as this Saturday is my birthday I'm hoping I can get a chance to relax and rest up. Even if I will spend a fair bit of Saturday cleaning and cooking in preparation for my family coming around the evening. Sunday though, Sunday I will relax.
