So there is ultimately a fair bit to do to the house before it's ready to move in. The big three are:

Install gas central heating and water heating. The storage heater (solitary) does not a warm house make. Plus gas heating is cheaper than the all electric option. Hopefully the government haven't scrapped the offered grant for changing from electric to gas heating yet.

Wiring needs to added to and possibly redone. Will look into suggestion by work colleague about having ethernet cables and extra tv aerial cabling put through house walls too.

Widen driveway, because being able to easily drive in and out is a plus, as you know having room enough to open your car door when on the slope of the driveway is useful. Right now though it's easy enough to park on a street only a minute or two walk away, though having a useable driveway in Bath is always a bonus and one I'm looking forward to having.

Then once they are done there's just the cleaning and decorating to do - once all the messy house modifications are done. Before he passed away the previous owner was an elderly smoker who hasn't changed the decor since the 70's-ish. With the furniture gone almost all of the smokey smell is gone too. Replacing curtains, carpets and removing wallpaper, cleaning and repainting walls will get rid of the rest.

Eventually after we've moved in (i.e. when it's affordable in the next few years) the kitchen will want updating, and at some point so will the windows and the front porch. And of course there will be the extension at the back to do, before it's finished. Well not that houses are ever really finished there will always be maintenance to be done, or new decoration will be wanted or something else. Of course right now none of that's a worry.

Anyway enough background. This weekend I have taken a huge quantity of measurements of hopefully most of the conceivable measurements that can be measured. This of course is to allow planning of locations of power points, radiators and the boiler in the short term, and then the furniture later. I've also stripped wallpaper. Yesterday had fun with [livejournal.com profile] purplegirl23 semi-competing to find the the biggest bit of wallpaper we could get to come off cleanly. Today I worked with my wallpaper stripping steamer by myself. Still got a fair bit to remove though, it's fun and it's slowly adds to the feeling I own the house.

Lastly for this entry is the amusing (well amusing at the time) conversation at the first meeting with the local postman:
Postman: Hello. *looks slightly confused at envelop and sort of wave/points it at me envelope* Are you in anyway related to the person *brief pause* with the impronounceable name who lives in, um...
Me:[Place my granddad lives]
Postman: Yeah that's it.
Me: Yeah he's my Grandad.
