Update time
Jan. 31st, 2008 05:09 pmThink it's probably time I wrote another update, to continue my often vague efforts to keep people up to date with the events in my life. And also to finally get around to putting a couple of things for people to see, while I remember
So things with the very lovely
purplegirl23 appear to be continuing well, at least in the sense the last four weeks have past both pleasantly and quickly. It's just good really. She's met my parents now, which isn't surprising seeing as I live with them, which by the sound of it is going to make telling her parents about us that little more interesting, whenever she gets around to doing it.
Playing Magic at the pub on Wednesdays continues to be fruitful for me, with my winning my third draft, which is always going to make me smile. I'm not that competitive (I tend to get quite stubborn if people try and make me be competitive), but I do have an edge of it and it's nice to engage in that sort of activity periodically.
Work continues to be work like, with me feeling somewhat adrift with the very open ended nature of my current piece of work. I look forward to being on a more proper project at some point, but I'm trying to use this the low pressure work schedule to improve my working habits. I had an appraisal which all things considered was very positive, and it reminds me why I'm lucky to be easily able to engage with people in conversations.
Also work had me briefly looking at a 'behaviour engine' (Google it if you care) as there was a possibility of my current project being a suitable test platform. My research efforts mostly hit a entangling wall of buzzwords inhibiting comprehension. I then felt better when a chat to a director revealed that after they've had a presentation and demonstration of it, they weren't sure what it was supposed to be doing either. The company behind it think it'll revolutionise the software industry, and EADS seem to agree spending millions to buy a 25% share of them. Personally the dilbert-esque sense in me (and no this is not in relation to the fact I'm technically an 'engineer' *shudder* - more corporate cynicism) wonders if it all just a series of smoke and mirrors made out of condensed and gaseous corporate buzzwords.
And in the stuff I keep meaning to post about subset:
Brian Sanderson was the author selected to finish the Wheel of Time series, which I suspect most of my friends who care about already know. Now having found this out via forums, and visited his site, out of curiosity I read the current draft (4th) of his next original book, which he has been releasing at each draft for people to read for free (in an effort to increase his exposure). The book Warbreaker is a well written fantasy novel, with a compelling story, believable characters, good plot twists you should have seen coming and a very clever and interesting magic system. I've recommended it to a few people already, who have recommended it to others. If you haven't read it yet do so. I certainly plan to purchase it when it actually gets released, and will get round to acquiring his other novels too. I should point out it is still only draft and to quote the author:
"Another option is WARBREAKER, the book I've released on my website--however, I hesitate to suggest this one, since you need to know that it's only a draft. There are still a lot of problems with it, as it is a work in progress."
Which makes me actually want to read the completed novel more, considering how impressed I was with the draft.
Let's see other than that, getting back into larping slowly, but surely. This weekend will see the return of Blaine, hopefully with all the weapons I need, but not with all the armour by the sound of it. However it is it will be interesting, I just hope there is lots and lot of healing.
Have also started watching Farscape, having got it for my parents as there Christmas present *cough*, it's not quite as blisteringly fast paced in terms of changes as I remembered, but then again I'm only in the first series. Still at least on DVD I can't miss an episode and wonder why half the cast has apparently left, two new people have arrived and someone's cloned with a chip in his head.
Oh yes the pasticio I made last Friday for the various people at Ailsa's and my parents, turned out well which was cool :)
