Choose your own adventure stories written by Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone. I do, I remember borrowing from my secondary school library dying and occasionally not dying, but not having the right bloody gems for the door at the end of Deathtrap Dungeon.

Well another series of choose your own adventure books, the Lone Wolf/Magnamund books written by Joe Denver are available to play online at Project Aon. Having been playing through the books as a group for over a year now on a forum I frequent. They should be what you expect, relatively fun, occasionally unbalance and full of instant deaths.

Worth a look if that sort of thing interests, or interested you.

Lone Wolf death aura claims all who travel with him (Well almost, Banedon survives for being awesome).

They are worth playing, though they get easier once you have the sommersword (uber holy sword of evil smiting), except for the couple of books where having it in your possessions screws you over and it's best to presciently leave it behind).

Oh and it has a slightly worrying Aryan supremacist feel seeing as being 'swarthy' looking always equals evil.

I'll have to have a look at them again as I think I own the first 12 adventure books and 9 novels based on the universe. I haven't looked at them in ages though...

I reached the rank of Grand Thane in the Lone Wolf series. Of course, I was less than ten years old, so I cheated a lot, but I still reached the rank of Grand Thane.
