I didn't know that about 'fast' zombies. I thought fast zombies just weren't slow at all.
I also agree with you on fighting ability, in the sense that the more levels of weapon skill you have the more your undead can fence, as long as it is still unintelligent (until they hit the cut of point when they start to become intelligent enough to cast miracles, at which point they can get smarter slowly). What I mean is I don't like to see unintelligent undead picking targets. A skeleton shouldn't be avoiding those with blunt weapons (nor should it flee from them either). Given a choice between a heavily armoured target and an unarmoured one the zombie/skeleton should go for whichever one is closer.
Zombies and skeletons shouldn't be selecting targets - you need at least ghoul level intelligence to start targetting more vunerable targets and avoiding threats. I felt some of the undead were picking their targets too deliberately yesterday.
