You probably know this already but whilst it ios okay to have a fuel can in your car, it is illegal to drive with any fuel actually in this can. I know this because Col's brother is a fireman and at the scene of a major accident they often won't approach a vehicle until the fuel tank has blown up, they work on the premise that there is only one tank so if you have a full fuel tank in your boot and gog forbid, were in a major accident, the second explosion could kill an approaching firefighter.
other car essentials: blankets, sweets, water (but this needs regular updating) for both you and your radiator, and consider some of those gel handwarmers. Being at the side of the motorway in the cold and dark is no fun.
