Odd and ends
Sep. 1st, 2011 06:35 pmIt's been a while since I've updated so thought I should write an entry.
First things first, I had a couple of bits of good news towards the end of last week. I didn't leave enough work to be done to justify them having me back in London again, and my next project is Bath based and should run at least until the middle of November. Should give me time to get what I need to do and also give me some much needed experience doing some proper Java programming for a change.
Ayacon was fun, ran mostly on time, and it was nice to actually have a costume for it for once. On the plus side I was suitably creepy, on the minus side the oversized fake nails were damn uncomfortable. There weren't a great many events that I actually wanted to see, but it worked out as it left plenty of time to chat to people. The inn we stayed at was very nice (as was noted by the calibre of cars parked at it, five jags and a Ferrari!) and worked very well as somewhere to go to unwind from the general business of the con. Also managed to eat good food, now if we could only get that Chinese restaurant to relocate to somewhere nicer than Coventry it would be excellent.
Had a couple of days gaming with friends afterwards, which while fun was a little fraught at times, and didn't do anything to help me catch up on sleep from the convention. I find it interesting how effectively I can wing GMing table top games, as I ran a brief fantasy-esque version of paranoia just using the Barbarians rules to get my friends use to how it works.
Last weekend had a fairly relaxing Saturday as plans changes and
neomogrox made pasties so I had my parents around for dinner without having to cook. Sunday involved a trip down to Fareham to visit
theminxiekitten and her little boy, Tobias. Having had very little experience with babies, due to most of my cousins being older than me, or having had kids but far away, it was gratifying to discover I'm perfectly fine with them (at least once they're beyond the stage where I can hurt them by not holding them correctly). I was even left along with him for a few minutes, and nothing went wrong! It was a good relaxing day, which reminded me mostly that I should make time to go for more walks places. Monday then I managed to see
xanthipe for a bit, and then went to Liz and Jack's to play with their new now 7 week old kittens. Rachael had picked up a whole set of toys, and unsurprisingly it was the laser pointer that resulted in the most fun for all involved.
This week has been a mixture of getting back into the swing at things at home, especially when it comes to make good use of my evenings. Currently this is the form of biting the bullet and moving from XP up to Windows 7. So I've got a whole mess of software to install this evening.
