So I'm writing this from my hotel room on the free WIFI, which is by all accounts a good thing. I've been up since 6am and didn't sleep well the night before so right now I'm feeling pretty damn tired.
Day 1 began as most Day 1's on projects tend to begin, sorting out a computer (well in this case plugging it all together) and installing massive quantities of software. Initial impressions are that there are a lot of very stressed people in a company that needs to be doing a lot of things better, like for starters being less internally divided. The actual staff seem pretty good at their area of competence, but it's clearly one of those companies where everything has been done in the rush because of financial/time constraints and while they've done well to achieve what they have they could be doing it a lot better. We reckon we've got 2-3 weeks at most to prove the business case to the money men. We'll see how it goes.
Actually sorting out the hotel has been an irritating amount of hassle. The one we're staying at was found via a last minute booking site, we've got it tonight and tomorrow so note sure what I'll do Wednesday maybe head back home or try and find something else. The hotel's in Basingstoke are not cheap; I mean the Premiere Inn was asking £160 a night for pete's sake. I can imagine that finding places to stay is going to become a real irritation. Thankfully at the moment I'm on receipted expenses, though hopefully they'll sort me out an expense advance, I can't afford to pay for weeks worth of hotels out of my own pocket!
