Uus dä Schwyz
Aug. 23rd, 2004 01:37 pmNo the title doesn't mean I now speak German (well swiss-german), though it would be handy.
Anyway, what I have done since my last update. A lot is a good summary, as today is the first day I'm not actively going to see one or many things. So in quick summary style:
Thursday: P and I went to the Sitter a small river near where she lives, and had a picnic. I was tired travelling on the last two days so we had a nice relaxing day.
Friday: We travelled a lot. We headed first to Stein am Rhein a typically swiss town with a large area of older buildings. It took about 2 hours to get there, from there we got a boat on the Untersee (part of Lake Constance/Bodensee) and had a very leisurely journey (over 2 1/2 hours) to Kreuzlingen. In which I saw many Swiss and German towns (the boat stopped everywhere and the lake is on one of the Switzerland/Germany borders). Then finally headed home.
Saturday: We headed into St. Gallen to see its famous Baroque cathedral and the Stiftsbibliothek a very very old library that was in the 12th-14th centuryish one of Europes major centres of learning. The cathedral was impressive in that very over the top style that Baroque churches have, but the library was more so, have several books that dated to the 14th century and the renaissance as well as some of the original works on the German language. And a mummy for no clear reason, I assume it was payment for a late returned book ;-) We also wandered a bit around St. Gallen, and I have bought much chocolate for my family (and a bit for myself).
Sunday: P's Father and step-mother took the two of on a grand tour of east (I think) Switzerland. We went into the canton of Schwyz where Switzerland was born (stopping to look at another baroque catherdral and a famous town house), and on the way saw the Zürisee (Lake Zürich), the canton of Uri held the town famous for the Wilhem Tell story, from there we saw the Vierwaldstättersee an impressive lake surrounded by mountains and near the field Rütli in which Switzerland was born (clearly chosen as a site which would be good at attracting tourists - it has a view of the Vierwaldstättersee), finally returning home via the Klausen pass, a mountain pass (though I forget the names of the mountains) adding yet another impressive vista to the lists of sights that I had seen.
So in all I have been in 9 of the 26 cantons (like counties) of Switzerland, seen a lot of this part of Switzerland (both the country side and the towns) and importantly enjoyed myself, and go to spend a lot of time with P.
Again I have several photos, well I took several photos will have to wait for them to be developed to see how they came out.
Oh and I'm curious about how
fourmyle has got on making my costume for me.
