The best advice I can give for joining is to email them and talk about the best ways to help make sure you turn up (for example I'm supposed to book my sessions, even when I'm not supervised as it makes me less likely to skip them).
As for the garden - bulbs! Spend time this autumn and plant all the bulbs you can. it pays dividends in the spring and summer because for minimal gardening you get all the pretty flowers you could want.
