Amen to all of this. I've never gotten as lost in any town or city as I have in Bristol - I even find London easier! The one-way system points you wrote are a perfect echo of a pattern that ruined more than a few attempts for me to meet up with work friends in my first year there. In fact, it was the horror of Bristol that prompted my parents to get me a sat nav. For a while, it did work - at night, when you can change lanes at the last minute - but now they're all out of date again...
