Week 6 - Productive Destruction

So more posts about the renovation of my house. Sorry if this is less than interesting, but it'll make a useful record for my sakes anyway. Probably stick something non house related at the bottom.

So this week, well this week began thinking that we'd done most that we could and needed to tidy up. So [livejournal.com profile] purplegirl23 loaded the car with the 18-20 bin bags of ceiling tiles and wallpaper and headed to the dump; in Trowbridge. Why? Because the Bath one while close is ridiculously busy and even if you get there early still will involve a good sometimes hour long wait in the queue to get in, and isn't that organised when you finally get in either. The one in Trowbridge is well planned out making dumping stuff efficient and easy, and even in the middle of the day on a Saturday had no queue. So there you go; should you be in the Bath area and have stuff to take to the dump go to Trowbridge.

We got back with the aim of removing the various bits and pieces covering the remaining areas of wallpaper, while marking out where we wanted our power points, lights, switches, TV points and Cat-5 points to go. This grew into removing more things, like the electric fireplaces, handrails on the stairs and the wooden cupboard that took up the corner of the small bedroom. Removing one electric fire, and the board covering the existing real fire place meant we found the large quantity of collected earth and other things that had fallen down the chimney over time. Dismantling the cupboard was varyingly difficult - removing thin wooden boards from the sides fine, removing some of the crossbeams ok, removing the rest of them and being careful to not touch the length of wiring that went down the inside of one edge of the cupboard was harder. Especially when I bent my hammer... removing nails from the wall was fine, right up to the one which not only didn't budge, but the handle of the hammer bent before the nail even began to move... I guess I don't know my own strength or more likely I need a better quality hammer - though the head is salvageable.

So yeah there's a fair bit left to clear out. The more we've removed wallpaper and faux plastic tiles from the kitchen the more we've realised we're going to really have to do that room too, rather than leaving the kitchen cabinets for now like we'd originally planned. We need to do more planning of the various power points and we've also been looking at lights trying to work our what we'll want to have. There's also some bits of paint that need to be stripped where it's peeling (generally on the ceilings) and various areas that need a more aggressive de-glueing too. We're still having lots of fun with it though.

We've also been shown this extremely useful website for room planning. So we've been makes scale rooms with that to help with the planning. Recommend should you ever want to change furniture, or other things in a house.

Also pictures of the house renovating are going up here though there are some empty albums till I remember to get the photos off of [livejournal.com profile] purplegirl23.

In other news get to spend tomorrow with the Customer at work, seeing how well we've met up with his expectations, should be interesting with how much uncertainty we've had from there end - one half of my requirements due to various outside factors was two words long...

Still I get lunch out of the deal so it's not bad really. I also got to do the appraisal for my graduate (semi-)minion I've been (semi-)supervising. Was interesting as it was my first, thankfully I did well writing it up, and yeah the graduate did well.

Other stuff still having fun killing zombies with L4D with Charlene, and finally got around to watching Supernatural season 3 (3 episodes left to watch) too.

Lastly there's Minami coming up at the end of March, and as anyone who reads the extremely lovely [livejournal.com profile] purplegirl23's LJ would know we've shelved our big costume and our easy-ish costume ideas for now, and will just go with something we should be able to throw together fairly easily. With the house stuff since the completion, [livejournal.com profile] purplegirl23's increasing Uni workload and my minor, but annoying and tiring headaches we've not really had much time when we've had the energy to work on the cosplay. We've started a good long time ago doing bits here and there, but [livejournal.com profile] purplegirl23's skin tribulations and the long long time consuming process of house buying (which I started back in October effectively - so about a 1/3rd of year it took in all) we never seemed to get that much done. After the experience of frantically getting costume made for Amecon we both decided that spending all the available time we had on costuming from last week till the con would stop it being fun and make it into a stressful chore, and that we'd rather just go to Minami nice and relaxed. In future the aim is to work on cosplay whenever we feel like it and just have a set of costumes we can pick and choose from to take with us when a con comes up (and we have time/money to go to it).

Cunning plan on the Trowbridge dump. If it's more than 40 minutes away by car, there's also a decent one in Bradley Stoke. Although there might be moral concerns about using the facility of another council. Also, it always closes "five minutes before you got there". But there's rarely a queue.

"Faux plastic" tiles? That's scary. What does one use to fake plastic? ;-) Glad it's still all go, anyway.

Very old Parmesan. Is reminiscent of Bakelite.

I never realised "cheesy 80s decor" was so literal.
