...testing becomes a lot like trying to clear a minefield with a sledgehammer.

Hit things till something breaks (quite possibly any of the tester, testing tool and thing under tests), and then try and reassemble the separated limbs, bits of shrapnel and sledge hammer head into something that works regardless.
